The Master, the Mould, and the Wax: How a Bronze Begins

Every bronze begins before the metal is anywhere near the workshop.

It begins with a sculptor, a master model, and a decision: every surface detail on this object must be exactly right, because nothing will be easier to fix after this point. The casting process transfers detail forward with extraordinary fidelity. It does not correct what was wrong at the start.

Stage 1: Sculpting the Master Model

At Classic Art, masters are built in clay or wax. The sculptor works by hand, refining the form until every surface reads correctly from the angles at which the finished piece will be seen. There is no digital step here. The model is a physical object shaped by a person.

Nothing is added by casting that was not present at this stage. The quality of the final bronze is decided here.

Stage 2: Making the Silicone Rubber Mould

A flexible silicone rubber mould is taken from the master model. The mould captures every surface detail (texture, transition, tool mark) and becomes the template from which all wax replicas in an edition are produced.

A well-made mould can yield dozens of accurate wax patterns before the silicone begins to degrade. A poorly made mould will lose detail or distort the form on early pulls. Mould-making is not a side task. It is the first technical gate in the process.

Stage 3: Pouring the Wax Pattern

Molten wax is poured or painted into the rubber mould to produce a hollow wax replica of the sculpture. The wall must be cast to an exact thickness: thick enough to hold its form through the ceramic-shell process, thin enough for the bronze to cool evenly. Getting that thickness right is a matter of accumulated foundry knowledge, not a figure on a chart.

When cooled and removed from the mould, this wax pattern is a precise replica of the original. Each piece in an edition requires its own individual wax pattern. This is why a limited edition can be authenticated: every bronze in the run begins as a separate physical object.

Stage 4: Wax Chasing

The fresh wax pattern carries the seam lines from the mould halves. A wax chaser works over the entire surface with heated metal tools, removing seam lines, filling imperfections, and sharpening detail. In complex, multi-part sculptures, separate wax components are joined at this stage with a heated spatula, transitions smoothed by hand.

What leaves the wax department is a clean, seamless replica ready for the next stage.

The wax has now carried the sculptor's original work through four sets of hands. The bronze has not been poured yet. It will not be poured for several more weeks. But at this moment, the shape is set. The detail is locked. Everything from here forwards is about making that wax permanent in metal.
